The mail staff follows specific procedures regarding suspicious packages in order that nothing unsafe is delivered to employees: |
|||||||||
| 1. | Suspicious mail is bagged and the DOC Mountain Region Security Office is contacted immediately to retrieve it. It is then inspected and only delivered if DOC Security gives the mail room authorization to do so. When in doubt, the mail staff is instructed to "err on the side of caution and call DOC Security". | ||||||||
| 2. | The mail staff is trained in screening mail using the x-ray equipment in the Warehouse, Building 22. They are trained to recognize possible bomb materials, suspicious packages, and other dangerous materials and substances; refresher briefings are also provided periodically. Special training on specific threats, such as recognizing ricin and anthrax in powder form has also been provided, for the safety of the mail staff and the tenants on site. | ||||||||
| 3. | Information is posted in the mail room including a poster providing information on how to recognize suspicious packages, samples of suspicious mail, and other instructions. | ||||||||
| 4. | When so instructed, mail staff sorts mail wearing the appropriate attire, e.g., gloves or other protective gear. | ||||||||
|
The mail staff has at times received suspicious mail, and have turned it over to the DOC Police. Oversized envelopes with misspelled words, more than the required postage, no return address, and incomplete addressing are some of the signs of mail containing suspicious and threatening items and substances, although we have not turned over anything known to be dangerous. |
